I am newly Type 2 diabetic and need to learn how to balance my diet. Any recipes or diet books available?

I don’t want to buy special "diabetic" foods as I have a limited budget and a family to feed. I am also allergic to Aspartame! Is a low cholesterol/low sugar/low fat diet appropriate?

Having been diabetic for some 15 years, I can offer two bits of advice that I have ben given time and again over the years.
Firstly, avoid anything that says it is specifically for diabetics. Buy low sugar or no sugar drinks and jams.
Eat sensibly and regularly.
I have had no problems at all, control is by tablet and I do cheat!

I need a web site for a type 2 diabetic diet?

The American Diabetes Association has a lot of information. Go to http://www.ada.org or you could run a search for "Diabetes Type 2 Diet". I just did and I hit paydirt!

What is a good diet for type 2 diabetes?

Reducing carbs to a more moderate level is usually the best way to go. Get yourself a copy of the South Beach Diet, and use the recipes and meal plans in it. You don’t need to use the first phase, which is very drastic, but the second level would probably help get blood sugar down for most type 2s.

Medications might still be necessary, such as metformin. If its prescribed by your doctor, try taking it with yogurt, a no sugar added yogurt is best, as it won’t jack up your blood sugar.

The metformin is likely to cause stomach problems at first and the yogurt usually stops this problem. Take the metformin with the yogurt before meals, with a full glass of water. Metformin is the gold standard in oral diabetes treatment for type 2. If dietary changes and metformin don’t get blood sugar down to healthy levels, and the HbA1c down under 6.0, then consider asking for insulin.

Your doctor will decide on what treatment to start with, but ultimately, diet choices are up to the patient. The healthier the diet, the better. Eat lots of salads, and have lean meats, not fatty ones, avoid processed foods, white flours, and junk food, and also cut way back on fruit for a while.

Excercise such as walking is also helpful. Talk to your doctor about your choices.

Type 2 diabetes: Can someone give me some tips about how to control blood sugar with diet?

My dear darling 82 year old aunt has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She knows that she is supposed to stay off of sugary food, but when the dietitian tried to coucil her about what food groups to eat at which meals, she could not understand it. Is their a simple easy formula that I could explain to her. If it gets complicated at all, she just gets lost.

Get her a copy of the South Beach Diet. I recommend it a lot for my patients. It is so simple to use. She can lose weight on it too, but the main thing is that it is a very healthy diet for diabetics. Skip Phase one and start with Phase 2. You can get it at any book store in paper back or hard back.

Is it safe for people with type 2 diabetes to take diet pills lose weight?

im a 21yr old female in the usa , im 245 pounds 5′7, i am dieting but it doesnt seem to be enough, i have trouble exercising because of a heart problem and im desperate to lose the weight

If you have a heart problem, you certainly don’t want to use diet pills of any kind. They can be extremely hard on the heart, even the over the counter ones. Being a diabetic does not mean you can’t lose weight, it’s just that everyone wants to do it over night. Try the South Beach diet. Many dietitians and nutritionists recommend it for their patients that are diabetic and it was designed for people with heart problems. Just skip phase one and start with phase 2. Or learn to count carbs. Your meals should consist of no more than 45 grams of carbs each meal and you can have 2 daily in between meal snacks that are no more than 15 grams of carbs each. As far as exercise, all you have to do is walk every day for 30 to 45 minutes. If you stick to either one of these diets, trust me, you will lose weight and it will be easier to keep off than if you did it with diet pills. The South Beach diet will teach you about good and bad carbs, and gives you lists of things you can and cannot eat. It is a very easy, safe diet and weight loss can be quick in some cases…it depends on how much you weigh now, and how well you stick to the diet and how much exercise you get. It claims to get rid of belly fat first. I use this diet all the time, to control my disease. In the beginning, as with any diet, it can be a little hard, but is actually very easy compared to many diets. It does not tell you to eat a certain portion of food, and does not count carbs or calories. You will like it, most who try it do.

a low carbohydrate diet and type 2 diabetes?

is it good for someone with type 2 diabetes to go on a low carb diet

A moderate carb diet is probably healthier than a low carb diet.

So, for example, you might have up to 30 carbs for breakfast, 30 for lunch and 40-45 for supper.

Low carb is much lower than that.

Low carb can be heavy on the protien, which may not be a good idea, depending on the condition of your kidneys, whether you have high blood pressure or not, and other risk factors for kidney problems.

I use some low carb recipes, but I stick to a moderate carb diet. You really should talk this over with your doctor, or if you have one, a Diabetes Dietician.

What is the best diet for a Type 2 diabetic to use to lose weight?

A healthy, balanced, Diabetic Diet. Talk with your doctor or dietician, they can advise you on this. You need to limit your total carb intake and cut back on fats. With Type II DM, you also need to watch your protein intake, protein won’t raise your blood glucose levels but will contribute to renal failure.
