I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Why did I get it ?
Everybody in my family parents, siblings, now me.Did my pancreas sputter out ? Is it insulin resistance ? I am 46 6′1 275 lbs w/ hypertension also . Have yet to see a primary physician since hospital tests. It’s alway’s 200-300 glucose, since I started to monitor it,and as you can guess, I have no chance of eating properly, with all those yummies out there.Guess I’m doomed. Why me?
you’re right-you’re doomed. everytime you stuff one of those yummies in your mouth, consider this…uncontrolled diabetes leads to vision loss, decreased circulation (leading to amputation of your leg or legs) , kidney failure(but that 3-4 hours on a dialysis machine 3 times a week will give you some time to reflect on your sorry situation) and cardiac problems(with your weight and hypertension, it’s a given) plus a hundred other health probs r/t diabetes. contact the american diabetic assoc today.
I’m sorry to hear that. Well, diabetes is hereditary so if your entire family has it, you have a much higher chance of getting it as well.

As you listed family members have it which means itis genetic. And I would check with your doctor but it sounds like you are overweight. You need to eat healthy.Losing weightwill help you with both medical problems.

I am the same way.Genetic and overweight.
The answer is in your question…6′1" and 275 pounds. Probably no exercise either. You just rammed your body with so much glucose over the years that the pancreas couldn’t keep up. You have my sympathy, but unless you do something to change your eating and exercise habits then chances are your health is going to worsen.

My father, mother, several uncles and aunts, and my sister all had (most deceased now) or have diabetes. Therefore I am chosing to "have a chance of eating properly" by ignoring the "yummies" out there for the most part, and giving my body a fighting chance with excellent nutrition, plenty of purified water, lots of fiber, and regular exercise. You really don’t have a question in the "Why me?" portion of your question. What you have is the answer to your question. Everything you said is why you. The good news is, since you were "just" diagnosed, you can probably reverse it somewhat. Your attitude will be the first thing you have to change. If you continue the "guess I’m doomed" mentality, all your aspirations of being an overweight very sick individual, sucking down another lemon pie, will come true. Would you like to celebrate your 56th birthday? As Jim Rohn says, it’s not the wind that determines your direction, it’s the set of the sail.

with your family history you were predisposed to get diabetes .But unless you are extremely muscular you are obese and this is why it showed itself. If you had maintained a normal body weight and took reasonable exercises it probably would not have developed. Your insulin level is probably higher than normal(it usually is with type 2)but you have all the markers of insulin resistance. What can you do:
1 If smoker STOP no open for discussion
2 Eat sensibly-no sugary drinks/alcohol
No refined carbohydrates
low glycaemic index food
Reduce saturated fats in diet
this should lead to a gradual weight loss
3 increase exercises- walk gradually increase and aim to walk steadily for a hour at least 5 days a week
4 stick at it .Your diabetes developed after years it will take more than 5 mins to get better.
If you reduce your weight and take exercises all the evidence is that your insulin resistance will improve, you BP will improve, as will your blood sugar.
you may be started on oral anti diabetic drugs and other drugs depending on your lipids but if you follow the above then you may later be able to reduce or even stop them.If you don’t then it may be necessary to use insulin to get better control. To a large extent the ball is in your court. Self neglect and self responsibility. Why me -You choose-the yummies are there but you do not have to eat them -your choice -your body-your health-your future. You cannot blame anyone else.Sorry if I sound hard but there are no half measures here for you.

Type II diabetes is usually caused by a secondary problem like mine comes from having multiple cysts in my ovaries that made me insulin resistant.
